Mice are cautious, nocturnal, and very good at staying out of sight. Most people who have a mouse problem do not see a mouse. What they see, hear, or smell are the signs that mice leave behind, and knowing what to look for makes all the difference between catching a problem early and dealing with a fully established infestation.

The Nine Signs of Mice You Should Never Ignore
1. Droppings
Mouse droppings are the most common and most reliable sign of mouse activity. They are small, dark, and rod-shaped, roughly 3 to 6mm in length, similar in size to a grain of rice. Fresh droppings are dark and moist. Older droppings become grey and crumble when touched.
Where to look: along skirting boards, inside kitchen cupboards, behind appliances, under the sink, in loft spaces, and anywhere food is stored. The number of droppings and how fresh they are gives a reasonable indication of how active the infestation is and how recently mice have been in that area.
If you are finding droppings consistently in the same location, mice are using that area regularly. This is the most actionable early sign you will find.
2. Gnaw Marks
Mice gnaw constantly. Their incisor teeth never stop growing, so they gnaw to keep them at a functional length. In a home environment that means food packaging, wooden furniture, skirting boards, insulation, and electrical cables are all at risk.
Fresh gnaw marks are pale and rough-edged. Older marks become darker and smoother over time, which can help indicate whether activity is recent or historic. Gnaw marks on electrical cables are a particular concern, not just as evidence of mice but as a genuine fire risk that should be assessed regardless of whether the infestation is dealt with.
3. Scratching and Scurrying Sounds at Night
Mice are predominantly nocturnal, which is why the sounds they make are often most noticeable when the house is quiet. A light scratching, scurrying, or rustling sound coming from inside walls, beneath floorboards, or in the loft space at night is one of the most common ways people first become aware of a mouse problem.
The sounds can be brief and easy to dismiss. If you hear them on more than one occasion, particularly from the same area of the house, take it seriously. Mice in walls and ceiling voids are extremely common in UK homes, particularly in older properties with more gaps and cavities for them to move through.
4. Mouse Nests
Mice build nests from whatever soft material is available to them. Shredded paper, cardboard, fabric, loft insulation, and even soft furnishings are all used. Nests are typically found in quiet, undisturbed areas: behind kitchen appliances, inside loft insulation, in the back of deep cupboards, inside stored boxes, and within cavity walls.
Finding a nest confirms that mice are not simply passing through. A nest means they have established themselves in your property and are likely breeding. A single female mouse can produce five to ten litters per year with up to a dozen pups per litter, so an established nest needs to be addressed quickly.
5. A Distinct Smell
Mouse urine has a strong ammonia-like smell that becomes noticeable when a property has an active infestation. In smaller spaces such as under-sink cupboards, pantries, or loft areas with significant activity, the smell can be quite pronounced.
You may also notice a musky odour in areas where mice have been present for some time, even if the activity is no longer current. This is a combination of urine, droppings, and the natural scent mice leave as they travel their regular routes.
If a room or cupboard has a smell you cannot explain and other signs are present, mice are a very likely cause.
6. Grease Marks and Smudges
Mice travel the same routes repeatedly. As they move along walls, skirting boards, and the edges of floors, the grease and dirt from their fur is deposited on surfaces over time, leaving dark smudge marks along their regular paths.
These marks are most visible on lighter coloured skirting boards, painted walls, and the edges of gaps or holes that mice are using as entry or exit points. If you notice dark, greasy marks along the base of walls in areas where you have other signs, mice are using those routes regularly.
7. Footprints and Tail Trails
In dusty or less-used areas of the home, such as loft spaces, basement areas, or the backs of large cupboards, mouse footprints and tail drag marks can sometimes be seen in dust or debris. They are small and easily missed, but in areas of significant activity they can be a clear indicator of where mice are moving.
If you want to test whether an area is being used actively, sprinkle a light dusting of flour or talcum powder on the floor in a suspected area and check it the following morning. Fresh prints confirm current activity.
8. Damage to Food Packaging
Mice do not need much of a gap to access stored food. They can chew through cardboard boxes, thin plastic bags, and soft packaging with ease. If you find food packaging that has been gnawed through or find small amounts of food scattered near where it is stored, mice have been in that area.
This is particularly common in kitchen cupboards, pantries, and under-sink areas. Any food stored in cardboard or thin plastic in these areas should be transferred to hard-sided sealed containers if mouse activity is suspected.
9. Seeing a Mouse in Daylight
Seeing a mouse during the day is significant. Mice are naturally nocturnal and avoid open spaces during daylight hours. If a mouse is visible during the day, particularly in an open area of the home, it is usually a sign that the population has grown to a level where competition for space and resources is forcing individuals out into the open at unusual times.
By the point mice are being seen regularly during the day, the infestation is typically well established and will require professional treatment to resolve effectively.
Where to Check First
If you suspect mice, these are the areas most worth inspecting:
Behind and beneath kitchen appliances including the cooker, fridge, and dishwasher
Inside kitchen cupboards, particularly those at floor level
Under the sink, where pipe penetrations often create entry points
Along skirting boards in ground floor rooms
In the loft, particularly around water tanks and insulation
In basement or cellar areas
Around any point where pipes, cables, or conduits enter the building from outside
What to Do If You Find Signs of Mice
Do not wait. A mouse problem does not resolve itself. Mice breed quickly and populations can grow significantly in a short period of time. The earlier a problem is addressed, the more straightforward and less disruptive the treatment.
Over-the-counter traps and bait can reduce numbers temporarily but rarely deal with the full extent of an infestation, particularly if mice have established themselves in wall cavities, loft spaces, or beneath flooring. They also do nothing to address the entry points that allowed mice in in the first place.
