Pest control has traditionally been associated with one thing: chemicals. A pest appears, a product is applied, and the problem is dealt with. For decades, that was broadly how the industry worked, and in many cases it still is. But there is a more effective, more considered approach that has been gaining significant ground in both commercial and residential pest management, and it is called integrated pest management.

What Is Integrated Pest Management?
Integrated pest management, commonly referred to as IPM, is a structured approach to pest control that prioritises prevention, monitoring, and the use of the least disruptive interventions available before escalating to chemical treatment. Rather than reacting to pest problems after they arise, IPM is built around understanding why pests appear in the first place and removing the conditions that allow them to thrive.
The term has been in use since the 1950s, originally developed in the context of agricultural pest control to reduce over-reliance on pesticides and the environmental damage that came with it. It has since been adopted widely in commercial and domestic pest management across the UK and internationally.
The core principle is straightforward: treat the cause, not just the symptom. A mouse problem is not just a mouse problem. It is a combination of available food, accessible entry points, and suitable harbourage that together make a property attractive to rodents. Addressing only the mice without addressing those underlying factors produces a temporary result at best.

Prevention

Monitoring
Monitoring means keeping a systematic eye on pest activity so that any changes are identified quickly. In practice, this involves placing monitoring devices such as bait stations, insect traps, pheromone lures, and rodent monitors in strategic locations around a property and checking them at regular intervals.
The purpose of monitoring is early detection. A small rodent problem identified at an early stage is far simpler and less costly to deal with than an established infestation. Monitoring also generates data over time, showing which areas of a property carry the highest risk, which seasons produce the most activity, and whether any changes to the building or its operations have affected pest pressure.

Evaluation
IPM is an ongoing process rather than a one-off event. After any intervention, the results are assessed. Did the treatment work? Has the activity reduced? Are there signs of reinfestation? Is the prevention strategy holding? The evaluation stage feeds back into the monitoring and prevention elements, creating a continuous cycle of improvement rather than a series of disconnected callouts.
Why This Method Matters
The case for integrated pest management is strong on several fronts.
It produces better long-term results. Treating a pest problem without addressing its underlying cause is a temporary solution. IPM tackles the root cause, which means results last longer and the same problem is less likely to return.
It reduces chemical use. This matters for several reasons. Repeated or heavy use of pesticides can contribute to resistance in target species, making future treatments less effective. It also carries risks for people, pets, and non-target wildlife when products are not applied carefully. IPM minimises these risks by using chemicals only when genuinely needed and in the most targeted way possible.
