Summer is the time of year most people look forward to. Warmer weather, longer days, and more time spent outdoors. Unfortunately, it is also the time of year when pest activity across the UK reaches its peak, and for homeowners and businesses alike, that can cause some very unwelcome problems.

If you have noticed more insects, rodents, or birds causing issues around your property during the summer months, there is a straightforward reason for it. Pests are driven by the same basic needs as every other living thing: food, warmth, water, and the opportunity to reproduce. Summer provides all of these in abundance, which is why activity levels rise so sharply from late spring through to early autumn.

Understanding what drives that activity, and which pests are most likely to be a problem at this time of year, puts you in a much stronger position to deal with issues before they become serious.

Table of Content

  • Why Warmer Weather Changes Everything

Temperature is one of the most significant factors in pest behaviour. Many insects are cold-blooded, which means their body temperature is directly influenced by the environment around them. When temperatures rise, their metabolism speeds up, they become more active, they feed more frequently, and they reproduce at a much faster rate.

For species like wasps, ants, flies, and cockroaches, the summer months represent the peak of their annual cycle. Queens that have been laying eggs since spring now have large colonies capable of foraging widely for food. A wasp nest that contains a few hundred workers in early June can grow to contain tens of thousands by August.

Rodents are also more active in summer, though for slightly different reasons. Warmer temperatures mean more food is available outdoors, which encourages them to venture further from their usual harbourage points. Gardens, compost heaps, outdoor dining areas, and commercial premises with external waste storage all become more attractive. As autumn approaches and temperatures drop, rodents begin actively seeking warm shelter indoors, which means problems that start outside often make their way inside if left unaddressed.

  • The Pests Most Commonly Seen in Summer

    Wasps and Hornets

Wasp season in the UK typically runs from around May through to October, with peak activity falling in July and August. During this period, worker wasps are foraging constantly to feed the larvae back in the nest, which is why they become such a frequent presence at outdoor events, in gardens, and around food preparation areas.

By late summer, the larvae have developed and the colony begins to wind down. At this point, worker wasps no longer have larvae to feed, which means they lose their source of sugar and begin seeking it elsewhere. This is the stage when wasps become most aggressive and most likely to sting unprovoked.

Wasp nest removal should always be handled by a professional. Attempting to deal with an active nest without the right equipment and training significantly increases the risk of stings, particularly if the nest is disturbed.

    Flies

Flies thrive in warm conditions and become far more active as temperatures rise. House flies, bluebottles, fruit flies, and drain flies are all common during the summer months, and all present hygiene risks, particularly in food handling environments.

Flies carry bacteria on their bodies and transfer them to surfaces, food, and preparation areas simply by landing. A single housefly can carry millions of bacteria. In a commercial kitchen or food retail environment, even a small fly problem can represent a serious hygiene risk and a potential compliance issue.

Flying insect control during summer requires a combination of physical barriers, monitoring, and, where necessary, targeted treatment. Good waste management and hygiene standards are also essential.

    Ants

Ant activity peaks during the summer, and the annual flying ant season, usually falling in July or August across the UK, can bring swarms of winged ants to gardens and properties across the country. While flying ants themselves are relatively short-lived, the worker ants foraging through summer can become a persistent problem in homes and businesses if a nest is established nearby.

Ants follow scent trails, which means once a food source has been identified inside a property, the same route will be used repeatedly until the nest is treated. Surface sprays may disrupt the trail temporarily but rarely address the root cause.

    Rodents

Rats and mice are present year-round, but their behaviour changes across the seasons. In summer, food availability outdoors tends to draw them away from buildings, but that does not mean they disappear. Gardens, allotments, commercial waste areas, and outdoor dining spaces all attract rodent activity during the warmer months.

The real surge in indoor rodent problems tends to come in early autumn as temperatures drop, but the nests and populations that develop outdoors during summer are exactly what drives that later influx. Addressing rodent activity early in the season reduces the scale of the problem when the weather changes.

    Birds

Summer is the nesting season for many urban bird species. Pigeons, gulls, starlings, and sparrows can all cause significant problems during this period, particularly on commercial buildings where nesting leads to damage, fouling, and noise. Gull activity in particular intensifies during the breeding season, with birds becoming more territorial and aggressive around nesting sites.

Once birds have established nesting sites on a building, they will return to the same location year after year. Early intervention is far more effective than trying to deal with an established colony. Bird control solutions range from deterrent systems to proofing measures that prevent access to favoured nesting areas.

  • Why Summer Pest Problems Escalate Quickly

One of the most important things to understand about summer pest activity is the speed at which populations can grow. Warm conditions accelerate breeding cycles significantly. A single pair of rats can produce a large number of offspring in the space of a few months when conditions are favourable. A small fly problem in a commercial kitchen can become a serious infestation within days during a warm spell. A wasp nest that appears manageable in June can be extremely large and dangerous by the end of July.

This is why early action matters. Waiting until a problem becomes obvious often means it has already become significantly harder and more disruptive to deal with.

  • What You Can Do to Reduce the Risk

There are practical steps that both homeowners and businesses can take to reduce the likelihood of pest problems developing during the summer months.

Waste management is one of the most effective preventative measures. Outdoor bins, commercial waste storage, and compost heaps are major attractants for flies, rodents, and wasps. Keeping waste contained, bins clean, and storage areas tidy removes a significant food source.

Proofing entry points around the exterior of a building helps prevent rodents from gaining access as conditions change. Even small gaps around pipework, doors, and foundations can allow mice to enter a property.

For businesses operating in food environments, catering, hospitality, or any premises where food is handled or stored, summer is the highest risk period of the year. A proactive pest management programme throughout the summer months is the most effective way to maintain hygiene standards, protect compliance, and reduce the likelihood of pest activity affecting operations.

Regular garden maintenance also helps. Overgrown areas, woodpiles, and undisturbed ground all provide shelter for rodents and insects. Keeping outdoor spaces well maintained removes shelter and reduces activity close to the building.

  • When to Call a Professional

If you are seeing signs of pest activity around your property during the summer, early contact with a professional is always the right approach. By the time pests are clearly visible during the day, the problem is often already well established.

At EcoCare, our technicians work across residential, commercial, and industrial properties throughout the UK during peak summer activity. Whether you are dealing with a wasp nest, a rodent problem, a fly infestation, or something less straightforward, we will assess the situation properly and recommend the right course of action.
